Below is a list of bars and nightclubs that we can recommend in the Salt Rock, Ballito, Umhlanga and Durban areas. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list but rather those from which we have had positive feedback from the guests at our YOLO Spaces properties.
Siggi’s German Restaurant and Pub
Traditionally prepared German cuisine with imported German beer, Siggi’s has been a firm favourite among locals and visiting tourists for years. Located opposite The Beach House, Siggi’s has found the ideal balance between family restaurant and fun pub. The kids play area is within comfortable sight of the wooden dining deck. This is a favourite casual hangout for locals.
Ballito Lifestyle Centre
At Alchemy they celebrate craft products, proudly stocking many craft drinks produced in South Africa, with close to 100 gins, unique rums and brandies. You don’t need to be a ‘gintellectual’ to enjoy this complex spirit – you can try one of their house combos, gin-based cocktails, tasting boards, or check out the gin selection at the bar and speak to their team for suggestions and inspiration.
Soak up the drinks with simple but delicious bar snacks, or pop in next door to Alchemy Kitchen, their restaurant which serves tapas-style small plate dishes perfect for sharing and exploration. All-day brunch on weekends can be perfectly paired with the rotating selection of wines and bubbles available by the glass.
Step into The ‘Other’ Room, their cellar and retail outlet, for more bottle options. At their on-site Blackstrap Craft Distillery, they create East Coast inspired gins and rums available for tasting at the bar and restaurant.
Shakers Cocktail Bar
Shakers is considered by some to be the most popular place to go for a night out in the Ballito Village. Overlooking the sea, Shakers feels like the middle ground between a bar and a club with an open air balcony and pool tables as well as a dance floor with all the bells – DJ’s, strobing lights and young people unafraid to let loose and have a little fun shaking it.
Shakers hosts professional DJ’s playing radio-friendly hits from Thursday to Saturday, and every night in holiday season while big-screen TVs around the venue ensure not a second of sporting action is missed.
Shakers has plenty of specials to keep you partying, including happy hour specials from 5-7pm, Monday to Saturday as well as the occasional pool or beer pong tournament to keep things interesting.
Crush Night Club
One of the largest clubs in Ballito, Crush Nightclub is a haven for the young and beautiful who want to go out clubbing. It has three dance floors and the best music to keep you on them all night long.
While Crush is popular with younger people (especially during matric Rage) there is also the Sky Lounge for the over 23’s, so everyone is welcome to come party, whether you’re a dance-demon or more of a lounge-lizard when it comes to a night out. Crush frequently has awesome drink specials and lines up the best entertainment and DJ’s to keep you going till the early hours of the morning.
Beach Café & Bar
Zimbali Coastal Resort, Ballito
Situated at Fairmont Zimbali Resort’s Beach Club, Beach Café & Bar is the perfect accompaniment to any day. The menu includes a range of health poke bowls, salads & wraps as well as a variety of seafood and meat dishes to tantalise your tastebuds. An existing cocktail menu and wine list further compliments the offering.
Oyster Box Hotel, Umhlanga
The Lighthouse Bar is a sophisticated establishment with a fine view over the Umhlanga Beach and the iconic red and white Umhlanga Lighthouse. The bar is part of the elegant Oyster Box Hotel, and a romantic place to take in the sunset and watch the moon rise. The Lighthouse Bar’s signature drink, the Umhlanga Schling, is a must-try. Ingredients are close to Durban’s heart: cane sugar and cane spirit. You can watch sport with friends from large plasma screen TVs, and there’s live music from Wednesdays to Fridays.
